Two Ways to Give the Gift of OTTO (and One Way to Receive $500 in Pizza!)

The bad news is that holiday shopping is stressful for millions of Americans. The good news is, um, who doesn’t love pizza?

In an effort to make it easy to give the gift of OTTO this holiday season, we have implemented a brand new super-easy gift card system that is fully integrated with each and every OTTO location, including delivery and online ordering!card_side-photo

Send an OTTO Gift Card via Email
If you’re like some of us, you may prefer to do your holiday shopping in your pajamas from the comfort of your home. Totally not a problem. Just go to ottoportland.com, click on the Gift Card banner, and order a gift card in any denomination to be delivered via email.

Gift Cards via email work pretty much like an Amazon or Barnes & Noble gift card. The gift-receiver will get a stylish, personalized email with all the details, and only needs to print out the email and show it when it’s time to pay. The 12-digit code in the email can also be used for phone orders or online orders. Recipients can go online to check their balances or to reload.

Did we mention that by simply purchasing a gift card online, you (yes, you, the gift-buyer) are automatically entered to win a $500 gift card of your very own? That’s, like, a large pizza every month for two whole years just for giving someone a really cool gift.

Or, Give the Gift of Plastic
If you’re like some of us who aren’t into computers and whatnot, you can give an old-fashioned gift card that can be kept in a wallet or purse (or in a sock, really — who are we to judge?).

Traditional gift cards can be purchased at any of our locations in Maine and Massachusetts. Simply ask your server, bartender, or cashier, and they’ll be happy to assist. Just like our E-Gift Cards, these can be purchased in any denomination, and can be redeemed (or reloaded) at any location — including online orders and phone orders.

See how easy that was? You’re all set! Enjoy the rest of the holiday season!

A Few Words About Our Data Breach

It seems every day there is a report of another credit card data breach in the news. It’s strange phenomenon that our society has become somewhat numb to the incessant announcements of compromised data at behemoths like Target, UPS, and TJ Maxx, yet so many small businesses think that they’re immune.

As you may have heard, OTTO learned the hard way that smaller businesses are just as much a target as anyone else. We were hacked, and as a result, the credit card numbers of approximately 900 customers at our two Portland locations were exposed to hackers between May 1 and August 13. Despite ensuring that each of our our systems met the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards, we were hit. Despite monitoring software, virus scans, and an array of additional security steps at each location, the hackers still got through, undetected. (A report by Verizon found that 99% of breaches targeting POS systems are discovered by outside sources during the course of an investigation — and 85% of breaches take weeks to discover.)

We were crushed to learn that we had been the target of such an attack — one that may have potentially affected the very customers who have helped OTTO grow over the past 5 years. While the breach is much smaller than those suffered by other regional businesses (Hannafords, Shaw’s, etc.), it hits closer to home when it happens to smaller businesses founded, owned, and operated right in one’s own community. While the breach is believed to have affected only 3% of the credit cards used by dine-in and take-out customers (delivery customers were not affected) at our two Portland locations, it is a stark reminder that no target is too small for hackers.

We hope, by being open and transparent about our experience, that something positive will come from it. We know that we are stronger, more secure, and more vigilant as a result. We hope that other businesses in our communities will be as well.

As we have stated in our news release, and on leaflets available at our restaurants, we urge our guests to visit our website to learn more about what they can do to detect and prevent misuse of their payment cards, or call a special toll-free number we have set up (888-453-4022) to ask any additional questions they may have. We also urge other businesses to research ways in which they can increase security in their restaurants to avoid similar attacks. They are welcome to reach out to us as well. If our experience can help the businesses in our community avoid a similar attack, it’s better for all of us.

On behalf of all of us at OTTO, we apologize for any inconvenience incurred as a result of the attack, and greatly appreciate your continued support.

In Newburyport- OTTO and Leary’s go together like pizza & beer.

OTTO is proud to announce our newest location- 202 Merrimac St in NEWBURYPORT!

learys

This time around, our owners Mike Keon and Anthony Allen have a whole new bag of tricks. OTTO is opening up inside a liquor store!

Just in time to catch some of the renowned Yankee Homecoming event, our beloved OTTO, and Leary’s Fine Wine & Spirits will open their doors for the first time, as a shared space.

Stay tuned for exact timing!  We’re OPEN! 978-225-6160

Two businesses. One roof. Pure magic.

Opening their doors originally in 1897, Leary’s is the Bay State’s oldest purveyor of Wine and Spirits, and a true institution in the greater Newburyport area. Just think of the endless pairing possibilities of your favorite wine or craft beer with an OTTO signature artisan pizza.

In a neighborhood with such a bustling local economy driven by the arts, music scene, and food-lovers, it’s safe to say the ‘mashed potato, bacon, scallion’ and the ‘cranberry, butternut squash, ricotta’ pizzas will have no trouble fitting in with the locals.

But wait, there’s more! Somewhere in the near future, the beauty of this partnership will really shine when you can have your preferred beer, wine, or spirits DELIVERED with your favorite OTTO pizza.

Life in Newburyport is about to get a whole lot sweeter.

Otto 2It’s a bird… It’s a plane…It’s “EAT OTTO” on the Time & Temp building sign! Five Years of OTTO: A Month-Long Celebration of Food, Music, and Community

5th-candleWhen OTTO first opened its doors at 576 Congress Street on June 18 of 2009, owners Anthony Allen and Mike Keon had no idea that their humble slice shop serving up their unique take on a culinary staple would evolve into a fast-growing business employing over 240 employees in 10 locations, in 7 cities, in 2 states.

To celebrate 5 great years of food, friends, family, and fun, we’ve got a month of shenanigans lined up, including, but not limited to the following:

Saturday, May 24: OTTO’s 5th Birthday Bash with Elliott BROOD at One Longfellow Square
Pizza, giveaways, beer, wine, and great music, at one of our favorite venues! Come join the party on Saturday. Providing the music will be the band that fueled many late nights at the original slice shop, Canada’s Elliott BROOD, the Juno Award-winning ‘death country’ band whose live shows are “known to be lively affairs” (Washington Post). Also performing: Sympathy & the Lion.
Tickets available at One Longfellow Square

Throughout the month of June: OTTO Throwback Specials
KR1_0768Over the past five years, we’ve changed our menu from time to time. Sometimes we had to make room for new pies by retiring others. This never came without the cries OTTO enthusiasts who bemoaned the loss of their favorite pie.

In June, we’re reviving several of these pies at all locations for a limited time. Keep your eye on our Facebook page or our Twitter account for dates and times.

Friday June 20 & Saturday June 21: The Harmed Brothers LIVE at OTTO (FREE!)
To cap off our birthday month, another OTTO fave from Oregon, The Harmed Brothers, will be doing a two-night residency at our 574 Congress Street dining room. Stay tuned for more info.

Celebrate OTTO’s 5th Birthday with Elliott Brood at One Longfellow Square

Join us for an unforgettable celebration of food, friends, music, and community

We don’t usually make a big stink about birthdays, but we’re coming up on our 5th, and it just seemed wrong to not throw a party.

While we have multiple events and surprises planned for the weeks leading up to our actual birthday (June 18) and beyond, this is the big one — a celebration of food, friends, music, and community at One Longfellow Square on Saturday, May 24.

Brood_1Some of you may have seen a little three-piece band from Toronto called Elliot Brood at OTTO’s Munjoy Hill location about 18 months ago. And if you were ever in our original slice shop back in the day, chances are you heard Elliott Brood blasting while we cranked out pies. You might even say they fueled a lot of what we have built over the past five years.

An absolute favorite of OTTO owners and staff, Juno Award-winning Elliott Brood is a powerful three-piece specializing in an artfully unique brand of alt-country guaranteed to move you — physically and emotionally.  Whether churning out urgent, boot-stomping sing-alongs or lyrically-rich soot-stained ballads, these guys are the real deal. You really don’t want to miss them.  We’re thrilled that they agreed to be part of our celebration.

Sharing the stage will be Sympathy & The Lion, an alt-folk duo out of Lancaster, PA.

There will be giveaways, prizes and other surprises.

In case you need additional incentive:

“Elliott Brood shows are known to be lively affairs.”Washington Post

“Elliott Brood knows how to get a crowd off its laurels.”SF Weekly

“Elliott Brood holds fast to the notion that a great story-song sounds even better played fast and rough, propelled by frenzied strumming and rattling percussion.”The Onion’s AV Club

Slugger Walk Week: A Special Pizza, Wally The Green Monster & More!

09slugwally01smAs the official carb-loading sponsor of Slugger the Sea Dog’s walk from Fenway Park to Hadlock Field for Tourette’s Syndrome, we’re pleased to announce some special events taking place at OTTO’s locations in Boston, Portland, and beyond.

Fundraiser for Tourette’s Syndrome: Featuring Wally the Green Monster (OTTO 888 Comm Ave)
On Monday, May 5, from 5-9pm, while Slugger is busy trekking from Fenway Park towards Portland, we will be holding a fundraiser at our BU location (888 Commonwealth Avenue) to help Slugger reach his goal of raising $20,000 to benefit The National Tourette Syndrome Association and Camp Twitch and Shout, a camp for children and teens with Tourette Syndrome. Since Slugger can’t be there himself, he’s asked his good pal Wally the Green Monster to come by. Wally will be on hand, cheering on his pal, posing for photos, and certainly scarfing down some pizza.

IMG_20140418_181414_879The Slugger Special: A One-of-a-Kind Pizza To Benefit Two Great Organizations (All Locations)
In honor of Slugger’s heroic walk, we will also be serving a very special pizza creation, The Slugger Special, from Monday May 5 through Sunday May 11. We’re pretty sure you’re gonna love it. (We happen to know sea dogs and green monsters do!) This grand slam of a pie features house-made meatballs paired with herbed ricotta, bacon, and fresh herbs. Right?

A portion of every sale (slices and whole pies) will be donated to Slugger’s cause.

The Slugger Special will be available at all locations.
